Autoclave disposal is one of the heavier jobs in a clinic or laboratory clean-out. The unit is a pressure vessel, it is usually plumbed in and wired to a dedicated circuit, and it often sits in a room that was built around it. This guide covers autoclave disposal and steriliser removal in Australia: what we collect, what has to be isolated first, how access and weight change the job, and what happens to the machine afterwards.
Autoclaves and steam sterilisers are among the heaviest, most awkward items a laboratory or clinic has to retire. They are often plumbed in, wired to a dedicated circuit, and sitting behind a bench or in a room built around them. E-Waste Collect collects benchtop and floor-standing sterilisers from pathology laboratories, hospitals, dental and medical practices, universities and veterinary clinics across Australia.
Sterilisers We Collect
- Benchtop autoclaves: B-class, S-class and N-class units from dental, GP and vet practices.
- Floor-standing and pass-through steam sterilisers used in CSSD and laboratory settings.
- Laboratory autoclaves for media preparation and waste sterilisation.
- Dry heat sterilisers, washer-disinfectors and ultrasonic cleaners.
- Associated equipment: water treatment units, steam generators, loading trolleys and racks.
Before You Book: Isolation and Draining
A steriliser is a pressure vessel connected to services. The disconnection work is done by your facility or a qualified trade before collection, not by the collection crew:
- Isolate services. Power, water supply, drain and, where fitted, compressed air or steam must be isolated and capped by a licensed electrician and plumber.
- Cool and depressurise. Let the unit cool fully and confirm the chamber is at atmospheric pressure.
- Drain the reservoir and chamber. Water left inside adds weight, leaks in lifts and corridors, and corrodes the cabinet in transit.
- Run your decontamination procedure and label the unit as decontaminated.
- Remove trays, racks and loose parts so nothing shifts during the move.
- Record the asset: make, model, serial, and the last pressure vessel inspection record if your facility keeps one.
If your unit is still connected and you need that work arranged as part of the job, say so when you request a quote. See equipment deinstallation and removal.
Access and Weight
Benchtop units are usually a two-person lift. Floor-standing sterilisers commonly run from 150 kg to several hundred kilograms, and CSSD units may not fit through the door they were installed through, because the room was built afterwards. Before the crew arrives, confirm: doorway width, corridor turns, lift capacity, stairs, ramp or dock access, and whether the unit sits on a plinth or is bolted down.
What Happens After Collection
Serviceable units and parts, doors, gaskets, controllers, pumps, steam generators and trays, are assessed for reuse first. Units beyond economic repair are dismantled: stainless steel chamber and cabinet, copper pipework and wiring, control boards, insulation and plastics each go to their own stream. A recycling certificate is provided for your records.
What We Do Not Accept
We collect equipment, not waste streams. Please keep the following separate and use your existing licensed providers:
- Hospital beds, bed frames and mattresses
- X-ray film and radiology film archives
- Clinical and biohazard waste
- Sharps such as needles, blades, lancets and scalpels
- Chemicals, solvents, reagents and fixatives
- Samples and biological material, including sample tubes, plates and used consumables
- Pharmaceuticals and medicines
- Pressurised gas cylinders and liquid nitrogen
- Contaminated consumables
- Loose radioactive sources on their own. Equipment with a sealed source still fitted is assessed case by case.
Everything else is welcome, including working, non-working, surplus, outdated, damaged and end-of-life equipment, and single personal or home devices such as CPAP machines, nebulisers and mobility equipment.
Autoclave Disposal Rules and Records
Autoclave disposal is governed less by a single law than by three overlapping obligations. Electrical and plumbing disconnection must be carried out by licensed trades. Pressure equipment is covered by your state work health and safety regulator, so the last inspection record is worth keeping with the asset file. Electronic waste handling follows your state environment protection authority rules, and Australian recyclers commonly work to the AS/NZS 5377 standard for collection, storage and processing of electrical equipment.
For your own audit trail, keep the asset entry, the collection record showing what left the site, and the recycling certificate. That is normally enough to close out a steriliser replacement in an internal review.
What Autoclave Disposal Costs
Quotes vary because the work does. The four things that move the number are weight, access, quantity and recoverable value. A benchtop unit on the ground floor is a short job. A floor-standing CSSD steriliser bolted to a plinth in a basement plant room is a different exercise with a longer crew list. Several units retired in one program cost less per unit than a single call-out, and a recent model with a serviceable steam generator or controller can offset part of the cost.
Eligible items may qualify for free pickup depending on type, quantity, location and access. Photos and a model list get you a firm answer before anything is booked.
Autoclave Disposal for Dental and GP Practices
Most benchtop autoclave disposal comes from dental surgeries, GP clinics, podiatry and veterinary practices replacing a B-class unit. These jobs are usually simple: the unit is on a bench, the water reservoir is drained, and it can be carried out in one trip. The two things that slow them down are a unit still full of water and a practice that is only open the same hours the collection runs.
Booking the collection for the same week the replacement is installed avoids storing a dead unit in a corridor for a month.
Autoclave Disposal in Hospitals and CSSD
Hospital autoclave disposal is a project rather than a pickup. Pass-through sterilisers may be built into a wall between two rooms, services run behind panels, and the unit can weigh several hundred kilograms. These jobs need a site visit or detailed photos, confirmation of who is doing the disconnection, an agreed access route, and a slot that does not clash with theatre or CSSD operations.
Where a department is replacing several units, staging the removals around the install schedule keeps the sterilising service running.
Common Autoclave Disposal Mistakes
- Booking a collection before the unit has been isolated by an electrician and plumber.
- Leaving water in the reservoir and chamber, which adds weight and leaks on the way out.
- Assuming the unit will fit through the door it came in through.
- Forgetting the pressure vessel inspection record, which some facilities need for the asset file.
- Scrapping a late model unit that had resale or parts value.
- Mixing contaminated loads with the equipment, which stops the collection.
Autoclave Disposal Across Australia
Autoclave disposal runs nationally, with the densest coverage around the capital cities. See Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, or the full list of service areas.
Steriliser Types and What Changes at Disposal
| Unit | Typical weight | What changes the job |
|---|---|---|
| Benchtop B-class autoclave | 40 to 80 kg | Drain the reservoir, two person lift, straightforward. |
| Benchtop N or S-class | 30 to 60 kg | Often replaced in pairs at dental practices. |
| Dry heat steriliser | 20 to 60 kg | No plumbing, simple electrical isolation. |
| Washer-disinfector | 80 to 200 kg | Plumbed and drained, sits under a bench. |
| Floor-standing steriliser | 150 to 400 kg | Licensed disconnection, trolley and tail-lift needed. |
| Pass-through CSSD steriliser | 400 kg and up | Built into a wall, often needs panel removal first. |
Use the plate on the back of the unit rather than the model name alone, because cabinet weights change between generations.
What Happens to the Materials
A dismantled steriliser separates into several clean streams. The chamber and door are stainless steel. The cabinet is steel with painted panels. Pipework, solenoids and the steam generator hold copper and brass. Control boards, displays and printers go to electronics processing. Insulation, seals and plastics are sorted by type. Before any of that, serviceable parts are pulled: doors, gaskets, pumps, valves, controllers and trays are worth more in service than as metal, which is why a late model unit is assessed before it is dismantled.
How Long Autoclave Disposal Takes
Once a benchtop unit is drained and isolated, the collection is usually fifteen to thirty minutes. A floor-standing steriliser with good access takes around an hour, sometimes two where the unit is bolted down or needs a plinth removed. The disconnection work by your electrician and plumber is the part that sets the date, so book those first and the collection around them.
Preparing a Quote Request
Send the number of units, make and model of each, whether they are still connected, the floor and access details, lift size and doorway width, and photos of both the unit and the exit path. Mention if any unit still works and has service history, because that can reduce the cost. If a pressure vessel has failed inspection, say so; it does not stop the collection, it just rules out resale.
Do you collect a single benchtop autoclave?
Yes. Single unit autoclave disposal is routine for dental and GP practices.
Is autoclave disposal different for a washer-disinfector?
The process is the same: isolate, drain, decontaminate, then collect. Washer-disinfectors are usually lighter than a floor-standing steriliser but still need plumbing isolation.
Can you take several sterilisers across multiple sites?
Yes. Multi site steriliser disposal is planned around your install dates so each site is only without a unit briefly.
Autoclave Disposal During a Clinic Fit-Out
Fit-outs are where autoclave disposal usually goes wrong, because the old unit is nobody’s job. The builder will not touch a plumbed pressure vessel, the equipment supplier delivers the new unit but does not remove the old one, and the practice ends up storing a dead steriliser in a hallway. Assign the removal to someone in the project plan and book it against the install date.
A workable order for a small practice is: confirm the install date, book the electrician and plumber to isolate the old unit the day before, drain and decontaminate it, have it collected the same morning the new one lands, then file the recycling certificate with the fit-out paperwork.
Autoclave Disposal for Veterinary and Podiatry Clinics
Veterinary and podiatry practices run the same benchtop units as dental clinics and retire them for the same reasons: a failed cycle test, a door seal that will not hold, or a model the service agent no longer supports. Autoclave disposal for these sites is generally a single unit collection, and the main thing to check is whether the unit is in a treatment room that stays busy, because that decides the time of day the crew comes.
Frequently Missed Steps Before Collection
- Print or photograph the data plate before the unit leaves, so the serial number is on file.
- Remove the water treatment cartridge or RO unit if it is being replaced with the steriliser.
- Check the trolley or stand, which is often collected at the same time.
- Ask your electrician to leave the isolation point capped and labelled.
- Note whether the floor is tiled or vinyl, since it changes how the unit is moved.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you disconnect the autoclave for us?
Electrical and plumbing isolation must be done by licensed trades. Tell us what state the unit is in and we will coordinate the collection around that work.
Do you take a steriliser that has failed its pressure test?
Yes. A failed vessel has no resale value but the materials are still recoverable, and it should not stay in a plant room.
We are replacing several units across sites. Can you handle that?
Yes. Multi-site and staged removals are common with steriliser replacement programs. Send a list by site and we will plan the collections around your install dates.
Is pickup free?
Eligible items may qualify for free pickup depending on type, quantity, location and access. Heavy floor-standing units usually need a tail-lift vehicle and two crew, so these are quoted per job.
