Dental Chair Disposal in Australia: 5 Easy Steps for Dental Equipment Recycling

Dental chair disposal and dental equipment recycling in Australia

Dental chair disposal is harder than most practices expect. A dental chair is heavy, bolted to the floor and connected to water, air, suction and power. The delivery unit, light and spittoon often come with it. The computers around it can also hold patient records. This guide explains dental chair disposal and dental equipment recycling in Australia: what we collect, how to prepare an old dental chair and what happens to it after pickup.

E-Waste Collect collects dental chairs and surgery equipment from dental practices, hospital dental units, dental schools and community dental clinics across Australia. Our own team handles the pickup, so you deal with one company from your first email to the recycling certificate.

Dental Chair Disposal: What We Collect

Most practices replace one surgery at a time, or clear several rooms during a refit or relocation. We collect both. Typical items include:

  • Dental chairs: complete chairs with base, upholstery, foot control and armrests, from brands such as A-dec, Sirona, Planmeca, KaVo and Anthos.
  • Delivery units and spittoons: handpiece holders, cuspidors, water bottles and assistant arms.
  • Operating lights and monitor arms: chair mounted and ceiling mounted lights, monitors and brackets.
  • Plant room equipment: dental compressors, suction units and dryers.
  • Sterilisation equipment: autoclaves, ultrasonic cleaners and washer disinfectors.
  • Dental X-ray and imaging: intraoral X-ray units, OPG and CBCT machines, sensors and imaging PCs.
  • Practice IT: surgery PCs, servers, intraoral scanners and screens.

Working, faulty, surplus, obsolete and end of life equipment is accepted. If an old dental chair still works and has a service history, tell us. Working equipment is assessed for reuse or parts recovery before anything is recycled.

Why a Dental Chair Needs a Specialist Recycler

A dental chair is not a standard piece of e-waste. Four things change how it must be handled.

  • Weight and fixing. A complete chair is heavy and is usually bolted to the floor over a services box. It needs the right tools, a planned route out of the surgery and a team that knows how to secure it in a truck.
  • Water, air and suction lines. The chair is plumbed into the practice. Lines must be isolated and drained before the chair is lifted, or water ends up on the floor.
  • Hydraulics and motors. Older chairs may contain hydraulic oil. Motors, pumps and control boards are separated for recycling.
  • Patient data. Surgery PCs, imaging software, sensors and intraoral scanners can store patient records and images. These must be wiped or destroyed before the equipment moves on.

What We Cannot Collect

A few items from a dental practice need a different waste stream:

  • Amalgam waste and amalgam separator contents, which contain mercury.
  • Sharps, clinical waste and anything contaminated that has not been cleaned.
  • Chemicals, including X-ray developer and fixer.
  • Gas cylinders, including nitrous oxide and oxygen cylinders.

If you are unsure about an item, send a photo and we will confirm before the pickup day.

How Dental Chair Disposal Works in 5 Steps

  1. Send your list. Tell us the make, model and number of chairs and other items, with photos of each surgery.
  2. Confirm the plan. We confirm what we can collect, whether pickup is free for your job and how the equipment will leave the building.
  3. Isolate the services. Your dental technician, plumber or electrician isolates water, air, suction and power. Your team empties the amalgam separator and removes sharps and chemicals.
  4. Collect. Our own team unbolts and removes the chairs and other equipment, working around your opening hours where needed.
  5. Erase, recycle and document. Data bearing devices are wiped using Blancco data erasure software. Equipment is reused, broken down for parts or recycled for metals, plastics and circuit boards. You receive a recycling certificate for your records.

Dental Equipment Recycling During a Refit or Move

Dental chair disposal often happens as part of a bigger project. When a practice refits its surgeries or moves to a new building, the old chairs, lights, compressors and X-ray units usually leave in the same week. Plan the removal with your fit out company and include these points in your request:

  • The number of surgeries and the date the builders need them empty.
  • Access details: stairs, lift size, doorway widths and parking for a truck.
  • Whether any lights, X-ray heads or monitor arms are fixed to walls or ceilings.
  • Who on site will sign for the collection and receive the recycling certificate.

If you are moving premises, our medical equipment relocation guide explains what to move and what to retire.

Patient Data and Privacy

Under the Australian Privacy Principles, organisations must take reasonable steps to destroy or de identify personal information they no longer need. The OAIC explains these obligations. In a dental practice, that means checking surgery PCs, imaging workstations, X-ray sensors, intraoral scanners and the practice server.

E-Waste Collect wipes data bearing devices using Blancco data erasure software before the equipment is reused or recycled. Our registration and licence details, including our NSW EPA Radiation Management Licence, are listed on our certifications and compliance page.

What Happens After Pickup

Every item is assessed in the same order: reuse first, then parts recovery, then material recovery. A working chair or delivery unit may be suitable for reuse. Faulty chairs are broken down so that motors, pumps, control boards and lights can be recovered.

What remains is separated into steel, aluminium, copper, plastics and electronic scrap for recycling. When processing is complete, you receive a recycling certificate that lists the collected equipment, with serial numbers where available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is dental chair disposal free?

Many jobs are free. It depends on the equipment, quantity, location and access. Send your list and photos and we will confirm before booking.

Do you collect a single dental chair?

Yes. We collect single chairs as well as full surgery and practice clear outs.

Do you disconnect the chair from water, air and power?

Services should be isolated by your dental technician, plumber or electrician before pickup day. Once that is done, our team unbolts and removes the chair.

Can you take amalgam waste or the amalgam separator contents?

No. Amalgam waste contains mercury and must go to a licensed amalgam waste contractor. Empty or remove the separator contents before collection.

Do you buy used dental chairs?

No. E-Waste Collect does not buy equipment. Working chairs are still collected and assessed for reuse or parts recovery before recycling.
