ToggleVisual Field Analyzer Disposal Australia
Visual field analyzers (also known as automated perimeters) are complex ophthalmic instruments used across ophthalmology practices, optometry clinics, hospitals, and research institutions throughout Australia. When these instruments reach end of life, they present a unique disposal challenge: they combine electronic, optical, and mechanical components with the added consideration of patient data stored on internal drives.
EwasteCollect provides compliant, documented collection of visual field analyzers and related ophthalmic diagnostic equipment from facilities across all Australian states and territories.

A visual field analyzer (automated perimeter) is an instrument used to systematically measure and map a patient’s field of vision. It is an indispensable tool in the detection, diagnosis, and monitoring of glaucoma, neurological conditions affecting vision, retinal diseases, and optic nerve disorders.
Common models include the Humphrey Field Analyzer (Carl Zeiss Meditec), the Octopus perimeter (Haag Streit), the Medmont M700, the Matrix Frequency Doubling Perimeter, and earlier generation units from Dicon, Synemed, and Competer. Each contains a combination of electronic processing units, optical stimulus delivery systems, patient interface components, and data storage.
Components Requiring Specialist Disposal
A visual field analyzer is considerably more complex than it may appear from the outside. Responsible disposal requires understanding the full material composition:
Computing and Electronics
Integrated computing units, circuit boards, display drivers, and control electronics contain lead solder, cadmium, and brominated flame retardants that must not enter landfill.
Data Storage Devices
Many visual field analyzers store patient test results on internal hard drives or solid state storage. These devices contain identifiable patient health information and must be securely destroyed in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
Display and Optical Components
The bowl assembly, stimulus delivery optics, and LCD or CRT displays contain glass, phosphors, and in older units, small amounts of mercury requiring specialist handling.
Mechanical and Structural Parts
The main housing, chin and forehead rest assemblies, patient response button, and stand or table mount contain recoverable steel, aluminium, and engineering plastics.
Patient Data and Privacy Obligations
Visual field analyzers that have been in clinical use almost certainly contain patient health information on internal storage. Under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APP 11), health service providers are required to take reasonable steps to protect personal information from misuse, interference, loss, and unauthorised access, including at the point of equipment disposal.
Simply wiping a device does not always satisfy this obligation. Physical destruction or verified secure erasure of storage media is the recommended approach for devices holding sensitive health data.
EwasteCollect can arrange secure data destruction for visual field analyzers and other data bearing medical devices. A separate Certificate of Data Destruction is issued alongside the standard recycling certificate, giving you full documentary evidence of compliant data disposal.
Legal Framework for Visual Field Analyzer Disposal in Australia
- The Product Stewardship Act 2011 (Cth) sets national obligations for responsible product lifecycle management, including electronic instruments.
- E-waste disposal bans in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, and Western Australia prohibit sending electronic equipment to landfill or general waste.
- The Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and Australian Privacy Principles require health service providers to ensure patient data is securely destroyed before equipment leaves the practice.
- Professional standards from RACGP, ACRRM, Optometry Australia, and RANZCO include expectations around responsible decommissioning of clinical equipment.
What EwasteCollect Collects from Ophthalmology and Optometry Practices
We collect the complete range of ophthalmic diagnostic and treatment equipment. A single collection visit can include:
- Visual field analyzers and automated perimeters (all brands)
- Slit lamps and biomicroscopes
- OCT (optical coherence tomography) machines
- Fundus cameras and retinal imaging equipment
- Tonometers (applanation, non contact, rebound)
- Corneal topographers and aberrometers
- Lensometers and focimeters
- Phoropters and trial frame sets
- Ophthalmic lasers and treatment units
- Practice computers, servers, and IT equipment
Combining all end of life items into a single collection is more efficient and cost effective than scheduling multiple visits.
The EwasteCollect Collection and Data Destruction Process
- Contact us and describe the equipment and any data security requirements. Let us know if you need a Certificate of Data Destruction.
- We provide a collection and data destruction quote based on equipment volume, location, and scope of data services required.
- Schedule a convenient pickup time. We can work around your consulting schedule to minimise practice disruption.
- Our team collects the equipment from your premises. No need to move items to a loading bay in most cases.
- Storage media are securely destroyed using physical shredding or verified overwriting methods. This step is completed before any other processing begins.
- All remaining materials are processed at our accredited recycling facilities, with metals, plastics, glass, and electronics each directed to appropriate downstream recyclers.
- You receive your certificates (recycling and, where applicable, data destruction) by email within 3 business days.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does EwasteCollect handle the Humphrey Field Analyzer (HFA)?
Yes. We collect all generations and models of Humphrey Field Analyzer, including the HFA II, HFA 3, and older HFA 600 and 700 series instruments, as well as all other major brands including Octopus, Medmont, and Matrix.
Our HFA has years of patient data on it. How is this handled?
We offer secure data destruction as part of our collection service. Storage media are physically destroyed or securely overwritten before any other processing. You receive a Certificate of Data Destruction confirming the date, device description, and method of destruction, which provides documentary evidence of Privacy Act compliance.
Is there a minimum quantity for collection?
No minimum quantity. We can collect a single perimeter. Consolidating additional end of life equipment in the same visit is more efficient and we encourage this where possible.
Do we need to export patient data before the device is collected?
If you wish to retain a copy of historical patient visual field results for your records, you should export or back up this data before collection. EwasteCollect’s process is focused on secure destruction of the data on the device, not data preservation. Your equipment vendor or IT provider can assist with data migration.
Are older CRT-based perimeters handled differently?
Older units with cathode ray tube displays require additional handling due to the lead glass used in CRT construction and, in some cases, small amounts of phosphor compounds. Our team is experienced with these older devices and processes them through appropriate specialist recycling streams.
How long does it take to receive our certificates?
Both the Certificate of Responsible Recycling and the Certificate of Data Destruction (where applicable) are issued within 3 business days of collection. Urgent requests can be accommodated; please advise at the time of booking.
Can you collect from a hospital eye clinic?
Yes. We regularly work within public and private hospital environments and are familiar with hospital logistics, infection control requirements, and facilities management coordination. Contact us to discuss scheduling for your department.
